Stephen King Said It Best…

Stephen King said it best…when writing don’t forget to think about the reader. They are the ones you want to read the book after all. You must create the idea, but as it grows the reader has taken over and made it their own. Leave room for their imagination to grow.

Editing Tips for Writers

Let’s take a look at this quote…

First, find what it means to you and then carry on with the rest of this post.

There are a million ways to dissect this quote and analyze how others perceive it. However, there is one thing that is fundamentally true any way you look at it. Editing is a very important step of the writing process. There is no way around it. Without proper editing even a ‘good’ book can appear bad. Now, if you are someone who wishes to improve their editing techniques here are a few places to start!

Less is more!

Filler words are never a good idea. Find what you are trying to say and use the least amount of words to properly get your point across. For example: There are many people who write — Many people write.

Avoid weak verbs.

Use visceral verbs or verbs that express action over weak verbs. For example:

Find out — Discover

He went to Italy — He traveled to Italy

Avoid weak adjectives.

Be mindful when using words like ‘really’ and ‘very’. There are always better alternatives. For example:

Really good – Great

Very big – Huge

Don’t introduce unnecessary words.

Why use a weak word when a stronger verb or adjective is available?

Give your post a proofread — Proofread your post (verb form)

He shows signs of carelessness — He is careless (adjective form)

You can find a lot of programs to help you edit as well, but that is a whole other post! Never be afraid to continue to educate yourself on your writing. There are so many outlets looking to  help you. Including us!

So follow us along your literary journey and we will learn together!

Discover What You Know

Take a minute and appreciate all that you have written. Be proud of it and remember that it all came from you!

Like a record that will keep on spinning, I will constantly remind you that writing is powerful in so many ways. It allows you to  discover and uncover your inner most thoughts, feelings, and ideas. In order to discover what you know, you can write! And just keep on writing. That is why we encourage you so often to write everyday- because you never know when you will return to that thought, feeling, or idea that will turn into something bigger!

Marketing on Goodreads

I am sure most writers, readers, and authors alike are aware of the Goodreads universe. An endless summer reading list is just waiting to be created. But, do you know how to properly use your account as an author, especially to market yourself?

Goodreads is a perfect platform for authors to engage with readers and fans, and here is how you can make the most of it!

Make sure you are on the Goodreads Author Program.

This will allow you to gain access to special marketing tools to promote your books and interact with readers. Read more about this program here

Customize your bio.

Your bio is the first thing a reader sees when going to your page. It is your job to make sure you put the best information out there. Make sure your profile picture is clear, give a good description of yourself, and attach your other socials so they can follow you! Goodreads gives some of their own very helpful tips here.

Share your love of reading.

Don’t forget this website was created so people could share their love for reading, so make sure you do the same! Write your own reviews and add books to your “Want to Read” list. You can also shelve books that have inspired your own writing, or you can customize your own shelves.

Create Kindle notes and Highlights.

Goodreads has a special opportunity to allow annotators to provide thoughts and insights on books. This is a great way for authors to engage deeper with their readers and let them in on why you chose a specific word, or go deeper into what a character is thinking. The opportunities are endless, and everyone loves an exact background story. https://f.gr-assets.com/misc/1564523884-1564523884_goodreads_misc.pdf

Turn on the “Ask the Author” feature.

Allowing readers to ask questions specifically to the author is great for engagement. The questions will not be visible until the author answers. However, by posting a few standard questions allows readers to see them when they reach your page. Learn more about this feature here.

Goodreads is a great platform for authors to connect to a specific community of readers. Don’t forget the power of communication!

Don’t Let Fear Keep You From Being A Writer

Some say it is good to be scared every now and then. It can push you towards your goals, and allows you to think from a different perspective. Now this doesn’t have to be jump-out-of your-skin kind of scared. It can be a personal vulnerability in your writing, such as being afraid to write something new or expressing a different opinion. However, in most cases that fear is holding you back. I encourage you to get out of your own head and do something that scares you! You only have one life to live, make sure you live it up to YOUR highest potential.
