Herne the Hunter | England

“The antlered spirit of a hanged man that guards Windsor Forest.”

Basic Facts:

  • Truth be told…Herne was probably based off of a real keeper of the forest.
  • Story goes: the hunter made a pact with the Devil, forcing him to be doomed to hunt forever.
  • He rides at night, mostly but is found during storms.
  • Herne is said to wear horns, rattle chains, blast trees and cattle BUT…is not commonly seen by mortals.
  • Our beloved hunter had an oak tree, which is rumored to be where he haunted most of the time, was torn down…but Queen Victoria came to the rescue and replaced it with another oak.

A Magical Monday

It’s always fun to do research, especially when writing. So, this Monday, we wanted to do some basic research for you on one of our favorite subjects in the fantasy-world: magic & magic-users.

Since there are so many different classes of magic, we decided to look at titles some of your characters might hold in your story.

  • Wizard: source of magic comes from books, learning, and practices.
  • Warlock: name translates loosely to “truce-breaker” and supposedly gets their power from a higher power (usually seen as an ‘evil’ entity.)
  • Sorcerer: power comes from within; “sors” Latin for “oracular response.”
  • Magician: in the paranormal or fantasy sense, magic is used for ceremonial purposes.
  • Witch: the female “wizard,” essentially.
  • Mage: magic-user but of an academic source.
  • Conjuror: magic used in the creation of objects.
  • Enchanter: magic is used to enhance items or charm people.

Horses Can Be Dangerous

On this fine Wednesday, we’re talking about a very strange legend from Scotland. This creature can transform into a variety of other creatures…but from my research, I couldn’t find what the creature appeared to be when not transforming into another creature…Help?

“Water horse that lures victims to ride on its back to their doom.”

Basic Facts:

  • The name “kelpie” is suspected to be a slang/mash-up of a couple of Scottish Gaelic words. “Cailpeach” or “colpach” are just a couple to name and these can be loosely translated to heifer or colt.
  • Since they’re most commonly known as a water horse, they typically can be found near a river or stream.
  • In their horse form, they attract children. But they’re not limited to only one form; they can turn into almost anything! An example is a beautiful woman, to lure a man out to the stream, where she snatches him up and takes him down the river!
  • These creatures wield magic. Mainly pertaining to the water to help them easily catch their prey.
  • What’s their weakness? Latching onto its bridle. Once you do that, you’ll have the power of a hundred kelpies. Eh, actually just one – but they’re darn powerful!

…to find new inspiration!

Recently, I’ve been interested in literature published before the 1960s. Just checked my Goodreads profile and yes, the earliest I have read was 1966. I felt like it was about time that I dive into the century prior.

I always thought that if someone was in a reading or writing slump, a good way to revive the inspiration is to visit a favorite book or possibly something new entirely but out of the person’s preferred genre. What are your thoughts on reading classics? Do you think it’s beneficial at all? Or just torture?

That being said, I’m reading The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas. For the first time! And boy, can I say: revenge is best served cold, sweet Edmond!

What In The World…?

Last week, we wrapped up our ‘Word’ series and spent a few days wondering what in the world would we share next? Let’s not waste any more time then!

We are talking about the creatures of mythology, who sometimes make appearances in novels and our writing. Let’s talk about Europe first.

“Warrior woman who chooses who dies or lives in battle.”

Basic Facts:

  • Got her powers from Odin (yeah, one of the Gods from Norse Mythology.)
  • Very noble characters. This is reflected in their appearance (statuesque, very fair skin, golden or jet black hair.)
  • May sprout wings or wear feathered capes. Depends on the story being told.
  • More in tune with human “weaknesses” (i.e. jealous, act on revenge, etc.)
  • Magical people? In some cases, yes! It’s up to your digression. (Hint: they were mortals then were chosen by Odin…that says something.)
  • Notable Valkyries: Brynhildr, Svava

Is #cockygate over? Has the battle been won?

If you’re a little late to the party (which I certainly was), an author, who shall remain nameless on our blog, decided to trademark the word ‘cocky’ for their own use in their series. Other authors who used this word in their titles were being targeted, flagged, and forced to change their own works for the sake of legal matters. Lives were flipped upside down and literature was nearly changed forever.

As of recently, a judge denied this author’s motion to practically stop all further publication of upcoming works containing the word in their title. You read that right: denied.

What I imagined happened during the hearing…

The judge even went on to say that “‘cocky’ is a common word and a weak trademark.” Savage.

Anyway, the word may not be entirely free from its chains but it will live on to see virtual bookshelves!
