Let’s Talk Author Bio’s

They may have opened the book because of the title or the cover, but the author bio is what connects you to your readers. You want to entice them just enough to buy your book and get to know you a little.

As with writing anything, there are some soft guidelines you can follow when it’s your first time writing something. So for an author bio it goes as follows:

Keep it short.

I know you’ve all seen author bio’s so you know that keeping it brief is key. The book is where you let all your words fly out.

Use third-person.

To sound more professional, use a third person voice when writing.

Nail down your one liner.

The hook, line and sinker is your one liner. Craft it carefully by sharing about yourself and something fun!

Be personal.

Share yourself a little. Enclude interesting facts that may go along with your book. But don’t oversell yourself. You can include your alma mater but dont go crazy on the list of achievements, that’s what google is for.

Use a professional photo.

This should go without saying, but you should not use a mirror selfie or a goofy family photo for your author bio. Take the time to get one professionally done, it will make all the difference.

Warm Up Your Writing Brain

Transcribe your thoughts to words faster by prepping your brain to prepare for writing. The purpose is not to create publishable material, but to get yourself ready for it!

The best way to start is to have no judgement or expectation of the outcome. You are writing to write more, which in turn will lead to writing better!

Write more —-> write better —-> write more

It is a beautiful circle of writing!

Now, in terms of some writing warm ups there are millions of prepared prompts and questions that you can search with a click of a button. Some other things you can do are write letters, write comments back to your viewers, or write about your life!

And there are even things to warm up your brain beyond writing such as exercise, brain games and meditation. Find out what works best for you. Each week test something new until you find what works.

What do you do to warm up your writer’s brain? Share your favorites in the comments!

Happy Writing

How to Spice Up Your Bookshelf

I scroll through instagram a lot…and I ALWAYS come across these beautiful bookshelves! So today our blog post is inspired by just that…bookshelves.

#bookshelf as over 6 million posts on instagram- because people love it! This might encourage you to post a picture of your bookshelf and rack up some likes OR inspire you to spice up your own bookshelf. Either way let’s get started!

  1. The first simple yet effective way to organize your bookshelf is by size. Play around with vertical and horizontal stacking for fun! Some people might even want to take it to the next level and sort the books by color too!
  1. Update your bookshelf by painting it or applying wallpaper to the back. This will give it a wonderful and new look!
  1. Don’t let your bookshelf get too cluttered. If you want to display small knick knacks put them in a fun jar:) Let your books breathe!

Have fun!

Journaling Basics

Whether you are an avid journal writer or you’re starting because of a new year’s resolution…welcome! Every now and then it’s good to go back to the basics. These are in no means an ‘How to’ on journal writing- just more of a way to get you started or to hit refresh.

You don’t have to put pen to paper.

More of the traditional way of journaling is to keep a notebook and pen handy and simply write! But now there are so many more options. You can dedicate a notes section on your phone to journaling, a file on your computer, or you can download an app to use on your tablet! Whatever will feel more comfortable and will keep you journaling.

Keep realistic expectations.

The best way to start something new, or keep something going is to establish a routine. Set realistic expectations for when you want to journal. It is also easier when you link it to something you do everyday. For example, on the train ride commute to work, while you’re having your morning coffee, or when you’re getting ready for bed. Create a healthy habit for yourself.

Write about gratitude.

When in doubt write about gratitude. It can be life changing for mental health when you take the time to write about what you are grateful for. And you can start small with the things in front of you and go from there.

Try something new.

Go outside the box and make your journal personal and messy! Add pictures, or scraps that you have found throughout the day, like a good newspaper article for example. Re-read and write in the margins!

Write for you.

This may be the most important of the journaling basics. Remember why you started it, and write for yourself. No one has to read it and it will not be graded or criticized. Think about what goals you have for yourself and your journal and work towards that.

Happy Journaling!

Reading Resolutions

Hello 2021!

What a year, am I right? But, now it’s time to welcome the new year the way most people do- with great resolutions! It is the time to reflect on the previous year and see where you want to take the new year. Here are reading  themed resolutions that you can start in 2021:

  1. Listen to more audiobooks.

Take a break from your average reading time and pop in an audiobook. It gives you the opportunity to multitask. Listen to your book at the gym, in the car, or while you cook!

  1. Take notes while you read.

Expand your mind and think about what you’re reading. Write down your thoughts or quotes. Then you can come back and read your notes later!

  1. Read books on your reading list or create a reading list.

Lists are beautiful! It gives you a reminder of what you want and something to look forward to. If you’re like me, you need a list or else you will forget what you even wanted to read in the first place.

  1. Write more book reviews.

Did you love it or dislike it? Either way write a thoughtful book review to give other people a look inside the book. It is helpful for potential readers and authors!

  1. Try a different genre.

I know trying new things can be scary, but you might like it! Go outside your comfort zone of historical romance and try a new mystery!

Modify the resolutions to fit you! It always helps to write them down and keep it in a spot that you can use as a daily reminder.

Writing resolutions post coming soon! So make sure you give us a follow:)

Happy New Year!

What Are Subsidiary Rights? And Why You Should Exercise Them

Subsidiary rights refer to transforming your book into other media formats. For example, turning your books into translations, audiobooks, or a movie/television show. Exercising the subsidiary rights for your books is a great way to gain more of an audience!

And that’s where we come in! Hershman Rights Management is a literary agency focused on helping authors branch out into other markets, more specifically foreign, audio, and motion picture. We want to help your book reach new heights!

Now, here’s a little on how that works…

We represent; indie and traditionally published authors, writers who aren’t yet published, and publishers without in-house subsidiary rights specialists. If you have a book that is already published that you would like to seek representation on, you can send us a submission right from our website with our unique instant approval process. We would love to take a look!

You can also use our contact page to ask any questions.

We have a wide author selection with a variety in genres. And have helped translate books into German, Italian, Polish, French, and much more!

Some of the audiobook publishing companies we work with include: Tantor, Dreamscape, Podium Publishing, Brilliance Audio, W.F Howes, Audible, and MMB Media!

A notable film project we have is Hallmark Channel’s “The Christmas Club” based on the book of the same title by Barbara Hinske.

In the traditional publishing sphere, we work with Thomas & Mercer (Amazon Publishing) to bring the ZOE BENTLEY series by Mike Omer to life- as just one example.

We have many new projects in the works, and we can’t wait to share them with you soon!

Take a look at what we do! And start thinking about your subsidiary rights!
