How Long should your Novel Be?

The length of a novel can vary greatly, and there is no one-size-fits-all answer to the question of how long a novel should be. Sometimes, we prefer quick reads (getting to the exciting parts fast!) other times we might prefer a long drawn out read that paints a picture as if you were in the story. However, there are a few general guidelines to consider when determining the ideal length for your book.

Consider your genre. Different genres have different conventions when it comes to length, with some tending towards longer books and others favoring shorter ones. For example, epic fantasy novels and thrillers tend to be on the longer side, while romance and mystery novels are often shorter.

Another factor to consider is your audience. Who are you writing for, and what are their preferences when it comes to book length? If you’re writing for young adults, for example, a shorter novel may be more appealing.

Finally, consider the story you’re telling. A complex, multi-layered plot may require more space to fully explore, while a simpler, straightforward story may be better suited to a shorter book.

The length of your novel should be determined by the needs of your story and your audience. There is no magic number when it comes to how long a novel should be, so trust your instincts and let your story dictate the length. Write On!
